"In post World War II, Trevor Bruttenholmand the fledgling Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense unravel the mystery behind one of the Nazi Occult Bureau's darkest initiatives: Project Vampir Sturm."

Joe R. Lansdale is a badass. Let's just get that out of way. The guy writes the "Hap and Leonard" series. Great, fun reads. He wrote "Bubba Ho-Tep", several Jonah Hex series and has won numerous Bram Stoker awards. Plus the guy invented his own brand of kung-fu.

Robert E. Howard is another badass. CONAN. Enough said.

So what happens when Lansdale tackles one of Howard's scariest short stories? One that Stephen King called "One of the finest horror stories of the century."?

Goodness. Horrible, gruesome, scary goodness happens.

Lansdale updates the story but keeps the meat and sinew the same. Sisters from Austin head to the Louisiana swamp country to check out an old plantation house they inherited from a family member. They bring friends along and very soon heads begin flying off shoulders, spirits begin showing up unannounced and an old voodoo man being giving sagacious and timely advice.

Nathan Fox delivers moody, atmospheric art. It's a bit hectic in some panels but for the most part he delivers. The kid can sure as hell draw blood and guts. Which is good if you're drawing a top notch horror comic.

The plot is Howard but the dialogue is all Lansdale. It's sharp, funny and sarcastic. The banter between the sister's is great as is the dialogue from the voodoo man, Alceeb. Another hit from our friends at Dark Horse. A great addition to your collections of horror comics.
